It is with the rosé that colour matters the most. Some might even suggest that colour is the most important characteristic of a rosé wine. Consumers often choose a rosé solely on its appearance. Reds or whites are more likely chosen for other attributes of the wine. Rosés are bottled in clear glass to show off the pretty nuances of various shades of pink, orange and salmon, whereas reds and whites are usually bottled in darker glass that obscures their colours. There is something very inviting and convivial about the beautiful, subtle hues of a rosé wine. The popularity of this category has seen persistent and prolonged increase. Worldwide consumption of rosé has risen 31 percent between 2002 and 2016, with a 147 percent increase in Canada. Every year we thirst for more rosé wine. And every year in June, BC Liquor Stores has a major release from the region that is the reference point for this style of wine: Provence in the south of France. Provence has a 2,600-year history producing rosé wines and is the largest region in the world focused on making this style. Over 89 percent of production is dedicated to the lightly coloured wines, accounting for 42 percent of France’s rosé (France is significantly the world’s largest producer). The Provence release is always a festive time in BC Liquor Stores. The desire to be outside on a patio or at a backyard picnic with a glass of wine inevitably hits you as eye-catching displays of the varied and uniquely shaped bottles emit pastel glints of mango, melon and peach. There are many to choose from and the three major appellations: Côtes de Provence, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence and Coteaux Varois en Provence are well represented. The terroir is different between the appellations, and indeed, the wines will show differences in character but there are always two things you can count on from any Provence rosé: it will be dry and it will be pale. These are the defining characteristics of Provence rosé. They are also the characteristics the rest of the world is chasing with their rosés. Gone are the days when the medium-sweet White Zinfandel, Mateus and Rosé d’Anjou dominated the shelves. The trend worldwide is to make rosé dry. The even bigger trend is to make it lighter and lighter in colour. The more delicate the colour, the more popular the wine seems to be. The actual colour of the wine is equally important to the intensity when attracting the consumer. There are many shades within the spectrum of pink and orange a winemaker can achieve through careful extraction and blending of multiple grape varieties. In Provence, the wines are always a blend of several grape varieties. Over a dozen different grapes are allowed, but the main ones are Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Tibouren. The colour is achieved by just the shortest contact between the skins and the juice. So, drop by BC Liquor Stores and enchant in the array of delicate hues and see which one calls to you on a hot summer day.13bcliquorstores.comIAIN PHILIPIain Philip is a wine educator, presenter, consultant and judge who specializes in delivering Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) courses.
