Beginning in 2014, Yellow Dog Brewing opened its doors on a (then) quiet stretch of Murray Street. Next up was Moody Ales, and soon two more breweries followed (Twin Sails and Parkside Brewery), hailing a serendipitous act of industrial municipal zoning that led to a cloistering of four breweries (soon to be five!) that affectionately became dubbed “Brewers Row.” If you haven’t been there yet, (or even if you have, it’s time to create an excuse to go again!) it is certainly worth making a pilgrimage to visit the breweries of Port Moody.Actually, the trip is fun and accessible thanks to the SkyTrain Evergreen Line expansion, which creates a modern spin on a pub crawl. Indeed, not only is Brewers Row quite transit friendly, from many parts of the Lower Mainland it’s even quite possible to bike there and train back, or vice versa. Brewers Row itself only stretches three flat blocks, making it easy to walk around – not to mention the food options are numerous and varied, ranging from tacos to food trucks (plus there is a myriad of local restaurants also nearby). Thus, with basic logistics covered, to help with the trip planning here is some advice and insights from a few Brewers Row insiders:WHAT MAKES THE BEER SCENE IN PORT MOODY UNIQUE?Dan Helmer and Adam Crandall, the Co-Founders of Moody Ales, express that, “More than anything, it’s the deep-rooted sense of community, not just from locals coming down for a pint but also from our neighbouring breweries on the block.” Sam Payne, Co-Executive Super President of Parkside Brewery, concurs, explaining that the uniqueness derives from, “A wonderful community of people and a wonderful community of breweries working closely together to celebrate each other and the beautiful area that is Port Moody.”ANY ADVICE FOR VISITING BREWERS ROW?“The number one rule for having a great time on Brewers Row, especially if planning on visiting all the breweries in one day, is pacing,” says Helmer and Crandall. “Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint. Take the time to savour the beers at each spot and think of taking a walk in the park instead of rushing to the next spot.” Parkside’s Payne adds, “…sharing flights of beer is a good strategy.”WE’RE HERE! WHAT OTHER, NON-BEER RELATED SIGHTS SHOULD BE SEEN IN PORT MOODY?The experts from Moody Ales and Parkside Brewery are all quick to mention Rocky Point Park, the picturesque waterfront park adjacent to Brewers Row. “You’ve got beautiful views of the inlet, miles of trails to walk, and a great ice cream shop for a sweet treat,” opines Moody Ales’ Helmer and Crandall, while Payne advises to, “Rent a kayak or paddle board, grab ice cream or fish and chips in the park, or visit a few wonderful restaurants in the area.”WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE BEER SCENE IN PORT MOODY?Helmer and Crandall explain, “The future is looking bright for Brewers Row. We’re set to open The Bakery Brewing just a few doors down from Moody Ales. This brewery will focus on funky, sour, experimental and barrel-aged beers.” Finally, highlighting that true sense of community inherent on Port Moody’s Brewers Row, Parkside’s Payne states, “We welcome the addition of Bakery Brewing onto Murray Street, and there is a rumour we have a new brewery opening off of Brewers Row on St. Johns Street as well. Good things coming!”34If you haven’t been there yet, (or even if you have, it’s time to create an excuse to go again!) it is certainly worth making a pilgrimage to visit the breweries of Port Moody.by James Nevison35bcliquorstores.comThe BC Ale TrailFor even more details on visiting Port Moody’s Brewers Row, head to the comprehensive BC Ale Trail website (bcaletrail.ca).
