These fresh faces are pushing the industry forward and inevitably driving change. Equally, established producers are stepping out of their traditional wine growing areas, looking toward newer ones and expanding their portfolios to include wines from outlying areas. One part of the revitalization of South Africa’s wines is making them with less overall intervention, such as limited chemical interference in both winemaking and in the vineyards. Another is making wines from old vines, vines that would have otherwise been uprooted to plant new ones with higher yields. An additionally important and noteworthy trend is making wines from less established regions that offer plantable land at lower prices, or have cooler climates – the latter being perfectly suited to the current global trend toward higher acid wines. However, one cannot exist without the other; if not for the established regions, the noble stalwarts of wine estates, this newer generation of boundary-pushers would never have the opportunity to shape the future, as they are doing now. Here are two important regions that exemplify that future. One region is more traditional but unquestionably relevant; the other is enthusiastically current. STELLENBOSCHA quick 40-kilometre drive east from Cape Town is the Western Cape’s most famous winemaking region. Stellenbosch is a charming university town with wonderful examples of Cape Dutch architecture and a lively assortment of shops and restaurants. Surrounding it, in the district of the same name, historical estates (some established in the 1600s, such as Spier) chaperone verdant vineyards woven along gently rolling hills. The groomed and sprawling estates in Stellenbosch have long enjoyed the successes of tourism and have deftly cultivated it; the region is a hub for Cape Towners looking for a weekend getaway as well as international visitors. Some of the country’s finest wines are made here; the provenance of Stellenbosch is unequivocal. Cabernet Sauvignon is a hugely important variety in the region; so much so, to champion the variety, a group of producers launched the Stellenbosch Cabernet Collective (SCC) during the Cape Wine Festival in September of 2018. But, Chardonnay, Merlot and South Africa’s darling white, Chenin Blanc (among other varieties) all fare well here. Of notable importance, South Africa’s own variety, Pinotage (a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault), was born and first planted at Stellenbosch University in 1925.Not all wineries here are large, nor are they all hundreds of years old, but in recent decades the region drew more investment in a place with plentiful heat and sun and enough rain to minimize water usage in the vineyards. SWARTLANDThe wild west of the Western Cape’s winelands, Swartland is a sprawling district situated north of Cape Town where it borders the Atlantic Ocean. While it’s long been a grain-South African wine is seeing a renaissance; a contagious sort of exuberance is evident amongst a new generation of young winemakers.by Daenna Van Mulligen75bcliquorstores.comSOUTH AFRICA CONTINUEDproducing area, Swartland is not new to vines; muscular reds and fortified wines were historically made here.Additionally, significant portions of the Western Cape’s oldest bush vine vineyards are located in Swartland. These old vines have, in the past decade or more, become highly sought after by a new generation of young winemakers as well as established producers. The importance of these bush vines cannot be overlooked. They are deeply rooted and hearty, and require no irrigation; especially when water in Swartland (and all over the Western Cape) is inadequate. While the yields in those old vineyards are not high, nor the volumes large, there is a wonderful mosaic of varieties; typical ones such as Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage and Shiraz, as well as those not generally associated with South Africa such as Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, Palomino and Tinta Barocca. The international attention Swartland has received in recent years, thanks to a capable generation of pioneers, has undoubtedly created new opportunities in the region. They have given birth to a new era, one with newer vineyards, which have assisted in spreading the name Swartland to wine lovers all over the world, including here in British Columbia.Be they from Stellenbosch or Swartland, you’re sure to find a delicious wine, including some new offerings that have recently arrived in BC Liquor Stores.Stellenbosch SPIER SIGNATURE CHENIN BLANCSouth Africa $13.99 659037 Consistently vibrant, this Chenin Blanc offers yellow apples, exotic flower and honeyed aromas.
